Notoriety

Les Cordeliers de Sarlat moment of fame came in 2009, with world famous travel writer Rick Steve’s visit. His review caught the attention of many global travellers:

“Les Cordeliers offers four-star comfort at two-star prices. Most of the seven cushy rooms are cavernous; all are air-conditioned and beautifully furnished, and a small kitchen is at your disposal with serve-yourself snacks and drinks. Best of all, the price is unbeatable.”

Story

Maison
de Maître

Les Cordeliers de Sarlat is a classic 1870 ‘Maison de Maitre’ house and showcases one-meter thick walls of golden ochre stone.

Translated as ‘master’s house’, the maison de maître is an elegant bourgeois mansion that served as the home of a squire (or minor landowner). Its symmetrical facade with central front door, tall sash-style windows, shutters, and gently pitched roof supporting chimneys make it instantly recognisable. Behind the stately facade, this maison de maître features evenly proportioned interiors with high ceilings.

There are three main rooms on each floor, the ground-floor reception room opening off a central entrance hall where the original gentleman owner would receive and entertain visitors.
The house extends approximately 5,000 square feet over the ground floor plus two upper floors with seven suites, each with a large en-suite bathroom.

The owner

Jeffrey
Klein

On a brief weekend trip to Sarlat la-Caneda, Jeffrey Klein fell in love with the town. He had been planning to leave his workplace and homes in Paris and London for a vibrant community with easy access to cycling, hiking, and skiing as well as music, art, film, and photography. Sarlat la-Caneda has it all.

He searched the town for a new home, admiring the stunning architecture as he explored and walked into Les Cordeliers de Sarlat, and immediately thought it would make the perfect home for work and pleasure.

Adopting a B & B was the perfect life choice. Jeff enjoys helping and being of service to people, and has a great deal of experience leading teams.

Having studied in Paris, Oxford, and the US, Jeff has cultivated an international lifestyle, outlook, and friendships.

Passionate about the human condition, he was an Associate Dean and Professor of Organizational Behavior at several universities in France, the UK, and Italy. While he still believes ‘organizational culture eats strategy for breakfast’, he is more interested in creating a breakfast that will linger in your memory. Convinced that life is for living, he found the best place to practice the art of living is in Sarlat la-Caneda and the Dordogne region, where an appreciation for village life is high, relationships are profound, art is a necessity, food is joyful, and living an active life is accessible.

Jeff endeavours to create a boutique style bed and breakfast offering. Over the last several years, he has re-done all of the floors on the ground floor as well as all of the bedrooms on the first and second floors. Using natural occurring stones such as travertine and marble and natural wood with a “baton rompu” design, he has worked tirelessly to create floors that are a treat for the eye. In fact, the elegant style of baton rompu can be traced as far back as 500 BC, when it was employed by the Romans in laying roads. The French heritage of such materials and design gives it the class desired by guests. Today, he continues to refurbish the overall decoration and aesthetics to bring out the true flavor of a maison de maitre.

Good Morning

Of course, there are also plenty of pain au chocolat, pain aux raisons, croissants, and baguettes fresh-baked from our partner boulangerie, and the local specialty.
