In 1940, The Lascaux cave was “found” by four Périgourdin young boys from Montignac. The 4 young boys decided to explore the hill and made the cavity they found larger so as to slip into the cave…
They were the first ones to discover the cave paintings which are now world famous and are among the very oldest works of art by man and the finest of all prehistoric painted caves.
Lascaux was open to the public until 1963; however, with as many as 1500 visitors a day, carbon dioxide from human breath began to damage the prehistoric paintings.
On exiting the cave in 1940, Pablo Picasso is said to have remarked, “We have invented nothing!”
Today, the original Lascaux cave is closed and is under close surveillance in order to preserve this site which is registered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
However, you can visit the replica of the cave system at Lascaux IV. Online booking is strongly recommended (especially in summer). Lascaux IV (replacing early museums Lascaux II and III) was opened in December 2016. Lascaux IV is an exact replica of the original Lascaux site and has been designed to evoke the sense of the prehistoric rock shelters for which the Dordogne is famous. Great care has been taken to emulate the original cave, right down to temperature changes throughout, damp cave scents, air pressure changes and interior cave sounds.
The Gardens of the Manor of Eyrignac, Historical Monuments since 1986, are among the Most Beautiful Gardens of Périgord, an enchanting parenthesis a few kilometers from Sarlat.
The Périgord area is synonymous with castles. It is said that there are 1001 castles in the Périgord. Perched on rocky outcroppings, the picture-book castles of the Périgord are treasures of the regions’ heritage.

You cannot explore the Dordogne Valley without visiting Rocamadour. The emblematic site of the Lot, vertical and majestic, crowned with its castle, is spread over several floors, clinging to the cliff that separates the Alzou stream from the Causse de Gramat.
No part of France is so impassioned by its culinary heritage as the deeply gourmet idyll of Sarlat. Dining has its soul around the kitchen table and the best gastronomic experiences remain traditional feasts lasting several hours.

EXCELLENT Basée sur 763 avis Strianvérifié Fantastic place in brilliant location. We have stayed here three times over the last 10+ years and it is as good as ever. This small boutique hotel is a grand old Sarlois mansion in beautiful condition. Our bedroom on the first floor was huge, elegant and beautifully furnished. The location overlooking a small square at the top of the Main Street in Sarlat is unbeatable. You are right in the heart of the old town in a 3-4 minute walk. The new hosts, Susan and Stephen, are truly welcoming, warm and helpful. Parking is on the street past the hotel, but can be limited. You are probably better aiming for arrival at or after 5pm when more space becomes available than at 3pm when spaces are at a premium. Your hosts will recommend places to eat that they have tried and tested. In addition, we had a really excellent meal at L’Entrepot in the centre of the old town - but not for you if you are vegetarian. You will not be disappointed if you stay at Les Cordelliers. smith_wrsvérifié Perfect in every way! We were in Sarlat in late May and thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Stephen and Susan (owners). We visited following a 1 week bike tour. They offered superb excursion and dining advice. Breakfast each morning was fresh and delicious, The rooms were spacious, most comfortable, and quiet, and their furniture and art was exquisite. The inn is very conveniently located in the old town, and we also enjoyed hiking and canoeing nearby. Stephen and Susan are most generous hosts going above and beyond in their service (rescued us from a near-miss train connection!), and we treasure our time and conversations with them. They are very familiar with the surrounding area, and both made us feel right at home. We will most definitely return. We are most grateful! Cynthia Svérifié A perfect romantic get away….💕 The Location was absolutely fabulous. The rooms were spacious and exceptionally clean. The bed was comfortable. And everything felt quaint and cozy yet luxurious at the same time. The host Steve and Susan were so hospitable! They gave 5 star service and were so kind. If Steve gives you a recommendation be sure to listen! Everything he suggested was fantastic! We really enjoyed our stay. Dreamervérifié Great location in the centre of Sarlat. Susan and Steve are outstanding hosts, very thoughtful and helpful. The location of Les Cordeliers is excellent, we could walk everywhere in the old town. Our room was spacious and comfortable. It was on the top floor and Steve kindly assisted us with our luggage. Breakfast was delicious, there was a good choice of parties, bread, cheese, yoghurt and fruits. Karin Bvérifié Excellent hotel, great position, spacious rooms! The most wonderful and perfectly situated hotels in Sarlat. Stephen and Susan are amazing hosts. They gave us very helpful advice on activities and Restuarant suggestions. The rooms are very spacious and brilliantly appointed. The breakfast is fabulous. We highly recommend you stay here when visiting this beautiful town davidfvérifié Perfect stay We just spent 3 nights at Les Cordeliers and loved our stay. It was a nice change from a hotel and gave the feeling of staying in a beautiful home. Our room was huge and had a lovely outlook over the park. The whole house is beautifully decorated. Location is perfect, being right on the edge of the medieval town and easy to drive to, but close to walk to everything in town. We had no problem finding free parking available a couple of blocks away, even on a busy holiday weekend (which we weren’t aware of prior). We stayed 3 nights and I’d recommend that as as a minimum if you can as there is so much to see and do close by and Sarlat itself is a lively place with plenty of great food options. Hosts Susan and Stephen really made our stay, being so welcoming and with great advice on the area. Their dinner recommendations were spot on and making reservations for us non-French speakers was really appreciated! swinsv1vérifié Great Location Les Cordeliers is a great guest home starting with a warm welcome and tour of the ammenities. Its location is a good balance between a modest walk to free public parking (in May available further down Rue des Cordeliers) and the ability to stroll throughout central Sarlat. The inviting breakfasts were delicious and a great time to gather helpful suggestions from Steve and Susan and exchange adventures with other guests. For an old building, the plumbing, etc. all functioned well. Highly recommend. hawkinsmrsestherhvérifié Perfect Excellent position. Exceptionally clean. The hosts Susan and Stephen were superb, friendly, attentive and very helpful. The breakfast alone would be worth the stay. I would recommend this hotel and certainly the next time we’re in Sarlat we will be booking again. Rose Evérifié A jewel in Sarlat What a fabulous stay with Suzanne and Steve. Both went out of their way anticipating the comforts of Americans like wash cloths, clean towels daily, tea and fabulous home made breakfast items. My husband is glutton free and every morning there was toast for him. Kitrionavérifié Superb comfortable stay in central Sarlat The most wonderful hotel, boutique, private, discreet. Our room and bathroom were wonderful - enormous, sunny, exceptionally tastefully done, all very clean. Breakfast is a changing delight of fresh fruits, cheeses and breads and pastries. The new owners are from Vermont US (also speak French), full of excellent local recommendations and a warm hospitality. There is a very accommodating and inviting honesty bar and terrace on the top floor that is stocked with wines. An area on the central landing has a coffee machine and a small fridge for storing some items. The location is super-central, within a short stroll to everything and gratefully just outside of the medieval centre. Parking (paid for or free) was very easy to find as the town is so well planned for visitors. Excellent location to explore an exceptional region.
